Week 4, Term 1

This week for science we experimented with talking cups. We found out that it was only when the yarn was tight that the sound travelled through the cups.

If you would like to create your own talking cups at home here are some instructions.

You will need:
-2 paper cups
-yarn string (length is dependent on how far you want the sound to travel)
-pencil

  1. Cut a long piece of string, you can experiment with different lengths but perhaps 20 metres (66 feet) is a good place to start.
  2. Poke a small hole in the bottom of each cup using the pencil.
  3. Thread the string through each cup and tie knots at each end to stop it pulling through the cup (alternatively you can use cellotape to hold it in place.)
  4. Move into position with you and a friend holding the cups at a distance that makes the string tight (making sure the string isn't touching anything else).
  5. One person talks into the cup while the other puts the cup to their ear and listens, can you hear each other?

Week 3, Term 1

Room 17 now have baby fish! We have eight of them. Take a close look at the picture, they are very small at the moment. Once they have grown the boy fish will be colourful and the girl fish will be a silver colour.

Bus Strike

Dear Parents,

Between 4:00am Friday 19 February and 5:30am Saturday 20 February 2016 some bus services will not be operating. These bus services include Metrolink, North Star, Go West, Waka Pacific, CityLink, Innerlink, Outerlink and most school buses.

The bus service that will operating as normal are Northern Express, Ritchies, Birkenhead Transport, Tranzit, Bayes, SkyBus, Murphy, Urban Express and Waiheke Bus Company.

You will need to arrange an alternative transport route to school if this affects you. Also be aware that traffic may be increased between these days because of people driving to work instead.

Many Thanks,

Week 2, Term 1

Room 17 had a super busy, fun week. They learnt how to use the chromebooks, high jump and how to problem solve in a group. The last picture shows our completed top playground. We are so lucky being so close to it!

Week 1 Term 1

This week our focus was on getting to know each other and learning about the Pinehill Way. We came up with some great classroom rules that we are using as our class treaty. Room 17 are currently reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl as our class chapter book.

In Week 2 we will be learning about high jump as part of our first rotation in Athletics.
Reminder to all, please bring your hats everyday as it is very important in this hot summer.
